First, ask them if they are licensed and insured. Make sure they answer yes to that question before asking them anything else.
Next, you want to ask whether they provide written estimates and understand how they get paid. Depending on the job, some contractors want 50% upfront and then 50% on completion, while others want to fully get paid upfront.
Finally, make sure they have references, ask to see photos of their previous work, and talk to their past clients.
